This weekend I got the chance to go camping (real camping!) at Turtle River in NWO. Just as we pulled in to our “camp site” (clearing), we spoke with some local hunters who were setting up for moose season. They told me that this particular site was #1 for bear sightings in Ontario. Sweet. Luckily, I don’t think I could’ve been with a better crew: experienced campers, and MNR employees to boot (one of whom started his career tracking bears in Algonquin).
So, here are some highlights of the trip…

What’s that I see back in the woods?
It’s called a “thunderbox”. And, in case you were wondering, the toilet seat seems to be hand carved out of Styrofoam. Sweet.
I caught my first fish! A Northern Pike that was too small to keep.
So we ate these instead!
These are called “bear boards”. They have nails sticking up out of them. You place them around your tent at night, so that if the bears try to come eat you, they get stabbed in the foot. Suckers.
In addition to the bear boards, we took other precautions. We burned everything that smelled like food before we went to bed. I even had to spit my toothpaste into the fire, since bears like the minty freshness, too.
Shocked and awed that I survived a night in the woods? Ha! This is only the beginning 🙂
